Nearby were 27 plastic baggies of pot.

The teen was released without bail after being arraigned Friday. He was charged with weapon, ammunition and marijuana possession.

PBA officials declined to comment.

bpaddock@nydailynews.com

news from you : Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz's speech in Co-op City

    Author: administrator
Subject: Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz's speech in Co-op City
Posted: 08 Mar 2012 at 7:02pm

The Bronx is back in business, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. declared in his third State of the Borough address.

His administration is wooing corporate America on terms favorable to the Bronx and solving the Kingsbridge Armory conundrum, Diaz said in his speech at Harry S Truman High School in Co-op City.

In 2009, he went to war with Mayor Bloomberg and big business over wages at a shopping mall proposed for the vacant fortress, scuttling the plan.

But in his address, Diaz crowed over splashy development deals reached in 2011 and early 2012, including a new base for Fresh Direct, an electric truck factory, a swanky Donald Trump golf course and a big-box shopping center slated to replace the shuttered Stella D'oro bakery.

The ventures are expected to create thousands of jobs.

Diaz also touted new armory proposals requested last month by the Bloomberg administration. Ice hockey and cycling boosters have expressed interest.

Some critics argue Diaz has discarded the pro-worker values he espoused in 2009 because he plans to seek citywide office.

He recently helped to broker a $130 million subsidy package for online grocer Fresh Direct with no living wage mandate and limited community benefits.

Diaz also highlighted a living wage victory: The Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, written after the armory battle, finally has support from City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

It won't cover retail workers at subsidized malls but will require developers receiving taxpayer funds to pay their own employees $10 an hour with benefits.

For better or worse, the living wage issue has won Diaz attention outside the Bronx ahead of the 2013 mayoral election.

"There is no other Hispanic candidate and he appears to be a principled guy," said Bruce Berg, Fordham University politics professor. "His living wage stand puts him in good stead with liberals."

Diaz will also talk schools, health, transit, crime and tourism. His administration will next week release its report on the education summit held last year and a health summit is on tap.

The borough president called for “respectful” police work, a nod to the fatal shooting by cops of unarmed Bronx teenager Ramarley Graham. Yankee Stadium, now hosting concerts and football in addition to baseball, is a tourist hot spot and Diaz repeated his pitch for a hotel near the venue.

But with unemployment in the Bronx stuck at 12.4%, industrial Hunts Point and Port Morris will take center stage.

The addition of Fresh Direct, Smith Electric Vehicles and lease negotiations with the Hunts Point produce market could mean Diaz is counting on the gritty neighborhoods to rescue the Bronx and power his political career.

dbeekman@nydailynews.com

news from you : Iman Drammeh Nur of Co-op City has a story to tell

    Author: administrator
Subject: Iman Drammeh Nur of Co-op City has a story to tell
Posted: 08 Mar 2012 at 6:54pm

Iman Drammeh Nur works and lives by a mantra that has taken her halfway around the world and back to the Bronx again.

"If history happens and no one is there to tell it, it never happened," says Nur, 52, who was born in the Bronx, just a few miles from her current home in Co-op City.

Nur is an artist by trade and passion and works in all manner of medium, from sculpture to Arabic calligraphy. She honed her skills at the High School of Music & Art, and went on to attend Pratt Institute and Empire State College, where she received her bachelor's degree in Cultural Studies.

"I have always embraced culture in a way that I was always curious about learning more," said Nur.

She continued her cultural investigation with a project that documented the Colored Troops of the Civil War. Her experiences with this project inspired her to create the Drammeh Institute in 1993 to work with documentary filmmakers to ensure they get the support they need.

Her work with the institute has taken her all over Africa, to countries including Chad, Morocco, Egypt, Senegal and South Africa. She has traveled to Geneva to address the UN Human Rights Council about contemporary slavery.

Nur is not the type that one would expect to go after hot button issues like racism and modern slavery. "She's not the kind of person that is always visible and on the scene," said her collaborator, Al Santana. "She's very quiet in her work but her work is very powerful."

Her latest project was an international forum last Saturday that ran parallel with United Nations 56th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, that examined the correlation between gender and environmental issues in Africa.

Community leaders, grassroots organizations, business leaders and citizens came together for the forum, “Women Water and Migration in Africa: The case of Nigeria, Ghana, Guinee and Chad,” at the United Nations Community Church to bring visibility to the water crisis and its impact on rural women and girls.

The event was sponsored by Nur’s institute in partnership with Tchad Agir pour I'nvironnement.

She is also still working on the Civil War documentary, revamping a four part series on the black church, and heading up a youth filmmakers program in Co-op City.

"I'm not a TV watcher," she says, "This really is it. It's a 24 hour gig."

When she isn't jetting off to Africa, putting together youth programs, or juggling documentary films she is the mother to a 21-year-old daughter and enjoys working on her artwork.

"I want to embrace everything that moves," she said. “Everything has a story to tell."

your announcements : La Sonora Poncena & Ocho Y Mas @ Lehman Center, 3/24

    Author: Guests
Subject: La Sonora Poncena & Ocho Y Mas @ Lehman Center, 3/24
Posted: 03 Mar 2012 at 7:25pm

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts continues its spectacular 31st season with the return of legendary salsa pioneers LA SONORA PONCEÑA on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 8pm. With over 40 albums, La Sonora Ponceña has entertained audiences for nearly 60 years. Led by founder Enrique “Quique” Lucca and his son, piano virtuoso “Papo” Lucca, the group is known for such classic hits as “Hachero pa’ un palo” and “Fuego en el 23.” Enrique “Quique” Lucca recently celebrated his 99th birthday. Also appearing at this unforgettable concert will be one of the hottest bands to burst onto the Latin music scene, 8 Y MAS, a collaboration of some of the best musicians in NYC and beyond who have taken salsa back to its original flavor as they play “La música de ayer, con el sonido de hoy” (yesterday’s music with today’s sound).

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is on the campus of Lehman College/CUNY at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets for LA SONORA PONCEÑA and 8 Y MAS on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 8pm are $60, $55, and $45 and can be purchased by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718.960.8833 (Monday through Friday, 10am–5pm, and beginning at 12 noon on the day of the concert), or through 24-hour online access at www.LehmanCenter.org. Lehman Center is accessible by #4 or D train to Bedford Park Blvd. and is off the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. Low-cost on-site parking is available for $5.

La Sonora Ponceña was formed in Puerto Rico in 1954 by Enrique “Quique” Lucca, who named the band after the famous Cuban band Sonora Matancera and his home city of Ponce, thus Sonora Ponceña. By 1956 the group included pianist Vicentico Morales, with Quique’s ten-year-old son, Enrique “Papo” Lucca Jr., already at the piano writing arrangements. Papo recorded his first piano solo at age twelve. The band’s early recordings featured various popular vocalists of the time, until Tito Gomez joined the band, staying until 1974. By 1960, the band had performed in New York, catching the attention of Fania/Inca Records owner Jerry Masucci. After studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Papo was an accomplished pianist and arranger, and in 1968 Quique stepped down as musical director. Under Papo’s direction, the band’s sound became a fusion of traditional Cuban and modern Latin styles. In 1969 they released their first Inca LP, with all arrangements by Papo, Hachero pa’ un palo, whose hit title song established them as salsa pioneers. They recorded 30 more albums for Inca and by 1980 were a huge success. As salsa romántica became popular, they adjusted to commercial forces without deserting their trademark sound. The band’s most recent albums are 2011’s El gigante del sur and A Band and their Music.

8 Y Más is the cooperative effort of internationally recognized Latin musicians/producers Bobby Allende and Marc Quiñones, who have embarked on a mission to preserve the genre of hard-core salsa music as well as to expose new generations to the music which is a staple of the Latin culture. In addition to Bobby and Marc, the band includes Eddie Rosado (lead vocals), Victor Baro, Samuel Baretto, Arturo Ortiz, Jose Tabares and Manuel Ruiz. The members have played individually, and collectively, with a “who’s who” of greats from many genres of music including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades, Ray Barretto, Tito Nieves, Marc Anthony, La India, Ricky Martin, Dave Valentín and Willie Colón. In November, 2006, the band released its first CD Juega Billar, which rose quickly to the top of many “best of” lists, including the Descarga Review and Salsa Picante. With their astonishing renditions of compositions by Lalo Rodriguez, Ismael Miranda, Rubén Blades and Ray Barretto, the band rapidly gained attention worldwide. In August 2011 the band released its follow-up CD, Que Mas, which includes collaborations with Eva Ayllón (“Saca la mano”) and Herman Olivera (“Lllanto de cocodrilo). The album has already been featured on Sirius XM’s three-hour salsa program, Caliente.

Lehman Center is supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. The 2011-2012 season is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, JPMorgan Chase, and through corporations, foundations and private donations.
